BlackBerry CEO Thorsten Heins sat down with Bloomberg in Los Angeles to talk a bit about the BlackBerry Q10, Z10 and some of BlackBerry's current business strategy. Thorsten was all smiles as the interview started on a high note on the news that the Q10 is now the fastest selling tech product ever at Selfridges. When asked about the higher price tag of the Q10 over the Z10, Thorsten noted that "it's a high quality product" for "people that need to get the job done."

He runs through a bit of the Q10 features and stats before jumping over to the Z10 and the Detwiler Fenton fiasco. Thorsten reiterated the fact that Z10 returns are in line with the standard but they are still in the middle of sorting things out.

When asked about licensing BB10, Thorsten says they aren't ruling it out and that once the BlackBerry 10 platform and OS is proven they'll see who comes forward and "whatever comes up we will entertain."

Last but not least, there is word of good things to come at BlackBerry Live in just a few weeks but when asked about the possibility of a tablet, Thorsten notes that soon the only computing platform you'll need is your phone.

He is definitely the right man for the job. I can't imagine anyone else doing a better job turning around blackberry... except for Steve Jobs.

Reply djraz_official 1 day ago

Steve Jobs is turning over in his grave wondering why the clowns at Apple screwed up so bad as to lose so much in share valuation as well as no longer being the worlds best selling phone losing that to android devices like Samsung. And watching BlackBerry ruse out of the ashes that Apple thought they'd see. BlackBerry is the new Phoenix. They will regain market share and as long as r& d is kept up it shouldn't be bad but that sad. How dare the morons at blackberry not realise that the bridge function essentially made my PlayBook useless. That's the sad part. 2 years in development and they couldn't get that right. From the start.

Services Value Proposition! How the smartphone, a BB10 device, will be your only need for a mobile computing platform.

There are other grounds where RIM is loosing ground on - something I'm working on in my personal blog post - and I'm inclined to think its because the majority of the free remaining QNX team (beyond the specific teams working with NASA, US Military, and similar organizations) is focusing hugely on this kind of project.

Reply KyonCoraeL 1 day ago

I really hope blackberry bridge gets reincarnated as a tool to control your PC with your phone. Well, It was possible before but I mean official support would be great. Except the gesture support for windows 8 and blackberry are conflicting...

Reply nuff_said 1 day ago

I agree. I have a feeling BlackBerry bridge will take on a new role with desktops and laptops. Maybe BlackBerry Link will end up being the tool we use to extend bbm and BlackBerry security to our desktops and laptops.

Reply Supa_Fly1 1 day ago

Exactly! What really is the benefit of a tablet when you think about it?
Larger screen = being less portable beyond 7" (that alone, beyond 5.5" is not really portable any longer unless fashion changes back to the mid 90's baggy days; but nobody is going to want to wear neon again).
A 2nd screen to a TV or smartphone = again, less portable and for it to be a 2nd screen its simply because the first screen was lacking in features and functionality in the first place! I'd take a 3.1 or 4.2" smartphone with powerful features and functionality that BB10 offers with a superior UI than an LTE based tablet with 12mths free data to go with it!

A powerful and intelligently designed and usable, efficient UI is the KEY!!

In my mind ... the only reason to have Quad/Multi-Core cpu's is because not only the OS is becoming powerful enough and efficient on battery power, but also because the applications are nearing or equaling that of what we have TODAY on desktops. An HD-IPS-LCD or TV being the hub itself with built-in speakers (to start with) should host external DVD/BluRay-Writer, USB (2/3) ports, HDMI input & output, a glass substrate imbedded table/desk along with it. The mouse ... that will be replaced with technology such as Leap or directly into such a table for gesture support, maybe even using dual cameras for depth and gesture recognition. Vocal commands work for roughly 73-83% of the global population, while brail keyboards and dual-cameras like XBox's will work even for those that are hearing impaired and can understand sign-language.

Mobile Computing Platform .... soon in a few years will full replace out desktops; only ones would remain would be ones similar to the Mac Mini and other workstations. However as servers get cheaper, services from Oracle, VMWare, Ubuntu, etc will be offered at VERY reasonable monthly, yearly price points where your mobile smartphone is simply enough to work with cloud based desktop/server OS while your smartphone is used as an input mechanism. Hmm.

Reply THBW 1 day ago

Exciting times my friend. There is a swagger to Thorsten's step and you know something big is around the corner. That is what happens when you build a new platform based on distributed computing. The incremental changes from Apple and Android aren't going to cut it any more. This is BB time and place. What an exciting time.

Reply Supa_Fly1 1 day ago

Exciting times indeed. I'm super excited and I agree with you ... however concepts like Enterprising Minds, and etc is not enough. Someone on an Apple board that I tried to show insight about the possibilities of what BB10 and QNX could bring and the response I got was ...

"What does all this mean? If someone has to sit there and spoon feed you why something is better (more flexible or whatever) it more then likely isn't.

Only home automation I have is a thermostat. It's only compatible with iOS and Android. I guess you could include my TV and DVR via Verizon Fios, once again though not on Blackberry.

BB might be technically more flexible but if I have no real world use for then how flexible is it really?"
quite humbling but very true ... if there is nothing we can use in the real world beyond just using it as a smartphone - the promise of "what it can do" or "what we'll see very soon" doesn't make a difference at all. It's simply about being in the real world use.

Disclaimer: I know BB is not Palm.

I hope BB doesn't go the way of webOS. It would be sad to see another great OS die. (Im saying this because of Thorstein's willingness to entertain licensing. Maybe some company will want to buy BB?) Just a thought... Erroneous or not.

Reply Supa_Fly1 1 day ago

Erroneous, by selective hearing.

First we want to get BB10 out there and prove itself which is what we're beginning to see with the z10 and the q10. We still have a few other launches on BB10 coming this year to watch out for. After BB10 has proven itself we will entertain interested party's to "LICENSE" BB10.

Not for sale!

Reply jasonmelling 1 day ago

You speak as one who knows a lot more than others. Who ARE you? :o (insert spooky music here)

I certainly hope Blackberry doesn't die, but rather thrives. I was quite miffed with the webOS fiasco, and don't want to see it happen again with an OS that is more elegant than ios and Android, and I ESPECIALLY don't want to see it happen again with an OS that I would love to support as my next phone purchase coming from Palm.

No, not selective hearing... I'm aware that BB has no plans to sell right now, I'm just wondering out loud (albeit with negative thoughts).

EDIT: Just realized you're probably quoting Heinz. D'oh!

Reply Supa_Fly1 1 day ago

haha ... I'm nobody really. Just experienced in mobile smartphones for a long time, I read a lot about smartphones, and seeing where technology is going - with the help of work experience in many different business segments (Financial, Mining, Consultant) as a contractor helps (BES admin duties is still junior but learned a lot).

Don't worry about BlackBerry - they still have LOTS of operating cash on hand, and ability to make loans to continue operating the business for at least another 2 yrs in an emergency if needed.

Reply Supa_Fly1 1 day ago

I don't give a DAMN if his "happy and relaxed" .... he's the CEO he gets PAID to feel that way, but we should be focusing on his work, his teams work, the ethics and direction of the company, and his success in doing ALL of that as the CEO!

I couldn't care less about his feelings! If I did seeing him happy and relaxed at this early a stage is NOT a blessing ... he should be more focused, remain driven, and keep pushing on. I'm sure he is ... but showing relief is like a lamb showing sign of weakness in business.

Ive already ditched my playbook, it doesnt compare to the Z10. I Like his approach to tablets. Unless you offer something, such as a seemless integration with QNX cars or whatever then dont even bother. Your not goona beat the ipad at the ipads game. Which is apps and games.

his last statement is what I am sticking with... this is a really big deal in terms of mid-long term strategy on mobile market evolution... we are in the attempt to mark the dawn of a "new" era - or "the next step" in computing in a sence in my opinion... BB is trying, and I think will manage, to make history here!

very exciting stuff!

Reply comparethemeerkat.com 1 day ago

"when asked about the possibility of a tablet, Thorsten notes that soon the only computing platform you'll need is your phone."

This line has got me thinking.... look at your Z10. what if it had a dock that meant you could use it any where. It would plug in to any TV, monitor or even computer and use peripherals like mice and keyboards.

Now imagine a new PlayBook. But all it is is a screen and massive battery..... until you slot your phone in...... and it charges it at the same time... just a thought.

That's whaT asus did with their Transformer and Padfone. Did not went very well though. I really hope it's not another transformer, but something else. I hope it's a dock station to use my monitor at work for example.

Reply DurdenLunarius 1 day ago

That would be what the Motorola Atrix attempted and they failed to grasp a large enough base to maintain validity in the market - and they launched the Atrix 2 as well without much fanfare to call home about.

Granted, Android as a mobile computing system VS QNX is a big difference, and time will tell if they tread where Motorola failed, but I don't think we're at the stage of swapping from using tablets as daily consumption devices, especially with bluetooth keyboards/mice accessibility, to something like a mobile docking station. Few people I know utilize HDMI connections from tablets/phones to TV's right now if they aren't for business use.

Good thinking though.

Reply ricocan 1 day ago

This has been the direction for the platform for a couple of years now. BBRY have hinted at a very similar idea, it goes out as far as being a full replacement for the desktop and laptop PCs for the majority of light users. I have been anxiously waiting for a more clear vision of this future, I am so son with trying to keep my home network and PCs working and healthy, this platform and technology will hopefully do aware with that hassle!

Listening to the interview, I thought the last few minutes to be pretty telling. From what I understand, he thinks that the phone will be your "mobile computer power" with respect to tablets.

My guess, would be that much like the OnLive service, a BlackBerry 10 device (Q10, Z10) would act as your processing power while an external device complete with battery and wireless tech only would act as an external monitor, think BlackBerry Bridge on crack. This could also explain why BlackBerry bridge has quite a few features missing - because they're completely re-designing it. This would also allow their tablet to be super thin and light.

You already have screen share through BBM, why not just screen share with your own tablet? Just a thought.

Reply BBGary 1 day ago

Actually, quite interesting. I would say that screen share with desktop software is even more interesting

Great interview -- Thorsten DOES look really happy. He knows the Q10 is going to rock the market, and it feels like they have WAY more up their sleeves for the future. It sounds like it just means they will put out a phablet as phones command higher prices/margins than the tablet market so best to manufacture a large phone versus a small tablet.

They have the mini hdmi to connect to tv screens, monitors etc.

I hope this doesn't mean they will have no incentive to bring BB10 to the playbook. Apparently they are experimenting with making apps for several screen sizes but I read somewhere it was harder to move from z10 to q10 screen size than they thought originally.

And if all that wasn't enough, BlackBerry Live is sure to bring some amazing new updates to BlackBerry. From what i gathered, if you dont have a PlayBook now, you better go out and buy one. BB10 PB is definitely making a debut at BBL2013. Also, I'm sure we will also see the BlackBerry Curve make an appearance as well. Seems like a great time to launch an entry product like that. In long term, Q10 can't sell more than Z10 although the initial demand is high due to upgrade by existing users. To survive RIM needs to win full touch screen / large screen users. The BlackBerry 10 OS is a generation ahead of completions. But RIM still has the old hardware and software quality problems that failed BlackBerry 7.

To survive RIM doesn't need to build hype on Q10. Rather, build these three things:

QUALITY, QUALITY, QUALITY

With BB 10 and the success it has...what they still need to put the icing on the cake is get those big name apps to be native and running smoothly. Everone will move to either Z10 or Q10.

Skype - Alread here which is a big step
Gotomeeting - Very beneficial for business users
Instagram - needed by active social media users
Viber
Bria - VOIP application which is very needed by business users as well
CNN
Fandango
IMDB
NBA
Pandora
Yelp
Paypal
Lyft
All Banking Apps
All Airline Apps

They are still far away from getting most of those, they should get it done asap

Reply Supa_Fly1 1 day ago

Gotomeeting - based & licensed on the Cisco WebMeeting or WebEx platform. WebMeeting is already in the store ... test to see if the meeting numbers don't work interchangeably.

Instagram - NOT needed. Really do we really require another social media web-service to share pictures, comment on pictures, and such with your friends and family; when FaceBook, BBM, or other long time existing platforms already exists?! Heck try EMAILING the picture for once! Do you really need nor care to have someone "thumbs up" your picture? FaceBook arguably, if not your contact list in your smartphone or email web service already has your contacts. To me this is a duplicate service that should not exist, and if FaceBook ups it's game in this respect it won't last long.

Viber/Bria/ are both regional VOIP services. Very needed more than Instagram - but have stronger presence in S. America or those with families there vs in N.America - I'm unsure about Europe/Asia. We need to standardize on VOIP platforms that support varying services; similar to how eBuddy has 1 sign-on yet works with all web-based IM platforms.

IMDB is already in BBWorld ~ you should check if available in your region.
NBA - I'm sure many global sports sites have game, player, and org states and updates for NBA; NBA doesn't need to create its own app for any platform.

Yelp - no comment other than I hate this service, doesn't do me any good really.
PayPal - welcome but that's what the webbrowser is for! Don't require an APP to duplicate what the browser can do for a web-based service - especially since it works in the browser.

Banking Apps: this is something I would've and previously have argued as a duplication of a web-based service. I now disagree and fully understand - TDBank does NOT work for the mobile site (submit in the keyboard fails, and the page does NOT proceed to logon), and the main non-mobile site does NOT have a working "login" button on the top right corner of the page!! Arrg!! Yes YES YES bring all banking apps NATIVE please ASAP!

Reply royfakhry 1 day ago

-Gotomeeting doesn't work using Cisco WebEx app, I tried to join by entering gotomeeting number and then tried the gtm ID but it didn't work. Don't know about the WebMeeting app searched for that name in BlackBerry World but no results (I am on t-mobile )

-Being a BlackBerry addict and constantly following the news it seems a very large user base on BlackBerry want Netflix, Instagram and Skype. It is a reason for other users to switch platforms as well so it is worth being on BB10

-Viber/Bria are very common in Asia and Europe and Middle East have a lot of friends there who turned away from BBRY because of the lack of Viber, Bria, and Skype

-Have you looked at the NBA Game time app on iOS and Android it is freaking awesome and soo user friendly beats any other sports app or web browser. I am an NBA fun and sideloaded the Android version for now

To cut the story short they need to have the same apps as the other platforms to stand a chance of competing. That is what I honestly think otherwise there's no reason switching

Reply Supa_Fly1 1 day ago

Thank you for the amazing update! much appreciated.

Netflix (Canadian version sucks on existing platforms really), along with Instagram (skype is here for 10.1 on Q10 for now, soon Z10), being reasons for users - probably in the millions - to switch is a bit deal. However ... we need to consider WHY it began to be a big deal and debunk it sooner rather than later. If we don't, and you KNOW Google (I think owns Instagram) will not ever port it over is a good reason to not allow the common user mindset that's its important enough of an application or service to migrate to another platform.

Didn't know about the NBA Game time app on iOS and Android.

I have Skype, Instagram and Netflix on my Z10. If you really want it, get the android sideload. Jeez, all this complaining.

Reply royfakhry 1 day ago

I agree with the last paragraph about the same apps as other platforms.

They need to focus on the top 50 or top 100 apps. If they get those then they are in great shape!!

Really, the top 5,000 is all they need. Everything else is just filler (e.g. fart apps, more flashlights, books, links).

Well, exciting. "More to come this year"!! I am going out on a limb with a prediction. Thorsten held up his Q10 and stressed that " Makes This your personal computing power and Only This" "Different Concept" I predict that BlackBerry will introduce a tablet / portable display that requires a wireless connection to a BB10 handheld device, maybe a mule or super basic display, regardless a larger display that requires itself to be bridged to your BB10 handheld. This is an idea I posted on here before the Playbook was released. I believe with processor power and other features and management this had massive potential. Obviously offers perfect security, everything is in only one device, also cost and simplicity, you don't have to store documents etc in every single device just in case. It could be done as a Tablet form factor or even in a super basic laptop form. Please mark my words here Adam, Kevin and Bla1ze. I for one will jump on this immediately. 3.....2.....1...

Reply johnnyuk 1 day ago

Firstly I agree he comes across so much better in one on one interviews, at the BB10 launch he appeared a little nervous which made the big announcements seem underwhelming but it's so much harder to come across well in front of a huge audience. That demands a talent for showmanship that you either have or you don't and most people don't so I won't hold that against him. It's not top of the list of what the company needs from its CEO right now, BlackBerry just needs a profitable strategy for the road ahead.

And now a couple of points that worry me about what he said. They expect to sell several tens of millions of Q10's through the current user base upgrading to the Q10? I hope that was just thinking off the top of his head and not the real expectation as the majority of the current user base are using low end Curve handsets and are either young people who can't afford a Q10 or people who are in countries were the average person can't afford high end phones like the Q10, iPhone 5 or S4. To sell several tens of millions of Q10's they'd need the vast majority of those people to be new BlackBerry users. Can't see that happening in those numbers this year, maybe for the next generation of QNX based phones if this generation does well.

His comments about the approach to tablets, where the only mobile computing power you need is your phone, is to me just covering up the gaping hole that is Blackberry's tablet strategy. I don't think there is a tablet strategy. I hope I'm wrong.

I love my PlayBook but I can see it's flaws and I know it's quirks (most people wouldn't put up with them). A future BlackBerry tablet has so many hurdles to overcome due to the financial and PR disaster that was the PlayBook at launch.
Those of you who are hypothesising that Thorsten means future BlackBerry tablets will be almost dumb screens with batteries that you connect your BlackBerry to give it CPU power and resources are suggesting that BlackBerry repeat the very same mistake they made with the PlayBook at launch. Needing a BlackBerry phone to make the tablet useful. Remember how the PlayBook was slated for lacking built in PIM apps requiring Bridging to a BlackBerry for those simple functions that every other tablet had built in? What you're suggesting is even worse, the tablet can't do anything at all without a BlackBerry connected to it! As others have pointed out other manufacturers have tried this approach and failed, but BlackBerry also tried a watered down version of this with the PlayBook at launch and failed. They won't go down that road again.

The tablet market would be very very difficult for BlackBerry to succeed in again right now at the price points people would expect to pay for one, i.e. less than an Android tablet due to the much smaller app ecosystem. BlackBerry can't research, develop and sell a profitable tablet at that price, they don't have the economies of scale of Samsung never mind Apple. That's why Thorsten is being vague, fanciful and even elusive about Blackberry's tablet strategy.

Posted via CB10

Reply bbfanboi 1 day ago

I agree with several of your points, but I totally disagree with your view of the PlayBook market for BlackBerry. If the PlayBook is running a version of BB10, we're talking about a speedy device that is smooth and quick, as the Z and Q phones are today. The lag on some core apps like the keyboard and PIM and App World send a bad message about the PlayBook, but the device itself had a lot of potential. Many folks bought the PlayBook as a standalone device. I rarely bridged it with my phone - two dozen times perhaps? But I used my phone as a hotspot so I can really enjoy the web on the PlayBook's browser. With my Z, the browser is better than that on the PlayBook, but the real estate on the PlayBook makes a strong case for BB10.

BTW the Z and Q phones are selling at similar price points to Android competition, yet they have fewer apps too. A PlayBook tablet will succeed if it gets the same treatment as the Z & Q phones. Quality, speed, reliability, stability, flexibility, and security has always won in the end.

Another way to put it is: are PlayBook owners going to shunned by BlackBerry because this sort of talk by Thorsten is very disenchanting! I want BBRY to build me a device that allows me to get rid of my PC. Build a PlayBook tablet with BB Link on it so I can sync my phone to it. Make it an 8-core device and position it as a serious desktop contender to aspire app developers to build some truly imaginative software for it.

Without the PlayBook, where would BB10 be today?

Corporate Backend Networking and Servers: Cisco, Oracle, Microsoft, and Citrix
(Oracle 11i, Microsoft Server/Exchange/SharePoint, Citrix vm desktop in the cloud on a server)
Corporate & Consumer (end user) cloud services: Microsoft, Citrix, and Cisco
(Office 365, Citrix Anywhere/Neighbourhood, Cisco WebEx)
Mobile Computing Platform: Box.net, Dropbox, VMWare doing the connection and file sharing, others mentioned above to make the cohesive connection and realization to make it all happen.

I really need to jot this all down, I'm thinking a LOT larger of a picture.

That last sentence to me signifies that BBRY are probably looking at a 5 inch phone or larger.

Samsung are on a good thing with their larger than normal phones. Tablets to end the way of the netbook. Leaving only phablets and convertible laptops to reign?

Personally, I hate larger phones and would be happy with an 8 inch tablet but android makers have really hit the low end of the hardware market making it hard to compete on hardware thus profits, so licensing out to hardware vendors on the tablets is probably ideal for them.

Would be great if we could boot up BB10 on our laptops. :)

Get dell or lenovo onto that ;)

Return rates? I had to return the Z10 2 times until I've received a unit that's working flawlessly.

1. Random restarts every 1-2 hours
2. Issues with vibration (apparently broken)
3. Now it's working okay. There's an issue here and there. Sometimes it locks up. Other than that, I'm absolutely loving the Z10.

Are you a Verizon customer? If so, they gave folks an ancient release of BB10. If not, I'd like to know what version of the OS you have. Mine has been very stable without any random restarts. I'm running 10.0.10.85.

Nailed what? Nailed the PlayBook in a coffin? Doing so also nails BBRY into a much smaller box too. When everyone is anticipating the death of the PC, where will BBRY be? Phones are great but they need to be synced with a desktop and share stuff off a larger device. A well-equipped tablet can fill that role very well. Easy portability, sync my video cam and still photos to the tablet, share on my phone. The size of the phone will always have significant limitations because of size, battery life, storage, RAM.

Very interesting.
My guess is that Blackberry will release a micro/mini streamer/set top box, which connects to the Q10 and Z10 via bridge. This will output the smartphones display to a HD TV/computer monitor or projector wirelessly, so no need for direct hdmi output from the phone.
The Q10 can then be used as a remote QWERTY keyboard input device and the touch screen used as a virtual mouse/ trackpad. The Z10s screen will divide the screen in half and do the same as the Q10 but with the virtual keyboard and top part of the screen being used for the virtual trackpad.
If you think about it, we mainly use tablets as media consumption devices and most people rarely use them outside of home, therefore TV screens and computer monitors would be more useful if a person wants or needs to use a bigger screen to consume/work with content.
I think a Playbook 2 device is out of the question at this point in time.

Reply Playbook007 1 day ago

Well you can do that already via DNLA. We use to be able to connect our PlayBook to the big screen and drive it via remote. Miss that feature. Here is the problem. I have 4 playbooks. The Z10 comes equipped with DLNA access... check under Media Sharing in the Settings...
You can already share your music/Pictures/Video with certified devices...
Also the new LINK will allow remote access to your PC...
So wireless interconnectivity is in progress using BB10

DLNA is designed to act as a bridge between your various bits of kit, so you can watch a film from your PC on your big-screen TV, play an MP3 from your smartphone on your stereo, or send shots from the family photo album to your wireless printer via your tablet. Think of it as a kind of home cloud: it shouldn't matter where your media is or what device you're currently holding; with DLNA, whatever you want should come to wherever you are and whatever you're using.
(Except Apple - they chose not to participate ...they use Airplay)

I have asked Sony to get involved with BB10 and start to integrate into the phones some more to give control of TV's. QNX has got to be better for them to deal with than Android.

Reply 2clever 1 day ago

Don't quite agree that a tablet is used mostly for media consumption. At home I prefer to view and respond to emails on my PlayBook. It is more convenient than a smartphone or a laptop. Every man woman and dog own an iPad and I know a lot of professional people respond to emails from their ipads when away from work. I believe there is a place for the tablet - maybe Thor doesn't want to compete in that market or maybe he has some genius plan up his sleeve. I hope they don't abandon the PlayBook because I love mine - five in our family. Not to mention video chat - how futuristic is that - who needs Skype?

It has a touch screen about the same size as the Q10 (probably is the same) and works very well. Only real draw back I could see to the cheaper little brother to the Q10 was that it was thicker, had a plastic case and the battery was not removable. But what a great starter phone! It's all up hill from here for BlackBerry

Reply drtootall 1 day ago

When I heard him mention that 'this' (his Z10) was the only computer you need it made me think of the tablet simply being a large screen which your phone docks into. This also dovetails well with his prior comment about it is so hard to make money on the hardware of tablets. If you gut the tablet and make it just a dock with a screen you not only get a tablet replacement, you get a desktop replacement, both at an exceptionally low incremental cost. As well screen size can be the full range of sizes, especially when you have HD screen resolution capability. The phone truly becomes a nirvana device! One computer device for all purposes, multiple docks to cover each use case. Look out Windows, here comes the BlackBerry assault on your home turf!

This also makes sense when you look at the convergence of desktop and mobile spaces happening in Windows, Android and soon to be IOS (I expect). BlackBerry is by default drawn into the desktop space because all of its competitors are there already. So on a hardware and on a software front the tablet dock makes perfect sense. I look forward to this transition.

I find his last statement really interesting. I wonder if BlackBerry is working on someway to interface BB10 that is currently on a persons Z10 or Q10 onto their laptop or desktop. If a tablet is not cost effective than the ability to run BB10 through a virtual machine might be what they are looking into.

Just a thought.

I don't think so. Call me old fashioned or just old. The day I attempt to create a video of my 600 slides with zoom, pan and titled on my BB phone just does not seem to be in the cards. Even if I can hook it up to a 22 inch monitor or 40 inch tv, I need a lot more - including REAL apps that can facilitate such processes.

Just because they blew the original playbook with poor salesmenship and are reducing it now with a reduce Bridge suite, does not mean that the concept should have been abandoned. But it's his company and his product choices.

Thorsten, please! I really do not like what I'm hearing from you lately.

BlackBerry 10 phones (Z & Q) are great devices, but a tablet is needed with a much larger display to do more stuff. Please don't tell me that you're abandoning the PlayBook because a tablet has a much larger display for many purposes such as gaming, doing spreadsheets, manipulating large amounts of text, CAD, sound engineering, etc. What is needed in the mobile space is more sophisticated apps, and a decent powerful tablet is what will bring those apps to fruition on the BB10 platform.

Killing the PlayBook is crippling BBRY's ability to grow and expand its mobile platform. I really do hope I'm wrong about what you're inferring. If you're saying future BlackBerry tablets will all have cellular capabilities, then perhaps, but I still believe there is room for a Wi-Fi only BlackBerry PlayBook. With a data plan on my BlackBerry phone, I don't really need one on my tablet, so Wi-Fi is more than adequate!

Try to understand what the PlayBook was up against:

* It was released at a time when there was great uncertainty about the future of BlackBerry
* It was released without any PIM software, which made it dependent on existing BlackBerry phones, which were experiencing very weak sales in the U.S.
* PIM software took over a year to arrive, but was written in AIR -- slower than it should have been
* Existing core apps, like the keyboard and App World, were written in Adobe AIR and was slow at times

Otherwise, the PlayBook itself was fantastic! Really, the PlayBook never got a chance to shine yet BlackBerry used it to seed apps for BB10, and to show the power of QNX on a handheld device. I love my PlayBook, but I'm still hoping to run some form of BB10 on it someday soon!

Maybe he believes a tablet needs cellular capabilities, that is ANOTHER data plan, so that carriers will back and sell the device. They have little interest in a device that does not generate additional on-going revenue.

The Q is a nice phone, but so is the Z. Lots of talk about the Q selling millions, but the Z had to pave the way and show that BB10 is a viable competitor to the iPhone and Android operating systems. Folks will take the Z more seriously now that the Q is making a strong statement in the marketplace. Taking a page from Kevin, Sell like Hell!

That's a spicy meatball!
Was really hoping for same or less pricing than the Z10 though. A bit disappointing.

Why the hell would you post a video that requires flash player when Z10 will not run the video

Great the new ceo sounds like old. The last time bbry said tablets would irrelevant they got blindsided by the iPad then fell on their faces trying to get into the market. Now the new guy is staying out of the tablet market which is putting pc to sleep. I don't think he really is this obtuse. Me thinks a bbry tablet with Os10 is near.
