Young Hollywood Awards Fug Carpet: Alyssa Milano

I am only Cougar Towning Mistresses — that’s the phrase Heather and I use to describe the practice of only keeping up with a show via its first sixty seconds, caught by your DVR at the tail end of the show you’re actually watching in its entirety. We call it “Cougar Towning” because that was the only way we ever watched Cougar Town. And yet, this is the perfect way to watch Mistresses, because it’s basically just the “Previously On,” and that’s all the good stuff! Alyssa Milano is ALWAYS crying — I guess she’s pregnant and she doesn’t know if it’s her husband’s baby or her, er, Mister’s, and her Evil Husband is being Evil about it. I think she might also want to cry about this, because…look. I like Alyssa Milano.  But I am concerned that, between this jumpsuit, and this thing, her stylist may not.

Many thoughts:

Emma Roberts may be wearing the first mullet dress I actually legitimately like.Jennifer Aniston probably just ate a sandwich, but her dress is snug enough to make ANYONE look like they might be gestating SOMETHING.This movie looks unbearably terrible.

The Fugtacular Now

I really wanted to make a joke using the phrase, “the Spectacular Naw,” as “…naw,” is kind of my feeling about this, having looked at it a while. I just couldn’t quite get there:

This is one of those things where, at first glance, it’s pretty cute. But it suffers from examination. Because the more you look at the way it’s constructed, the less interested you are in it. Like sausage. It’s sort of the sausage of dresses. Enjoy it without thinking about it too much, because once you start to think about the innards, you’re ruined.

Fugs and Pieces, August 2, 2013

How is it already August? Think about the unstoppable march of time, and then cheer yourself with the following:

–Did you hear? We’re on Pinterest! Our boards include “Everyone Looks Hotter in Sunglasses,” “Assorted Royals,” and, obviously, “Various Turbans of Note.” (Pinterest)

– At Girls of a Certain Age, everyone’s talking about the clothes in our closet that we don’t wear, but also just can’t get rid of. You guys know I’m a hoarder to begin with. (Girls of a Certain Age)

– Prince Harry, out and about in the blue beret you like so much. (Lainey)

– Speaking of the Royals, why doesn’t Kate wear Issa anymore? Because it’s now owned by an Al-Fayed. (Celebuzz)

– Fashionista takes a look at how September issues get made. (Fashionista)

– UT Austin has an espresso robot. Austin seems like the best. (Time)

– You’re heard about Sean Parker’s TOTALLY OUT OF CONTROL NUPTIALS. They were more out of control than you thought. (Valleywag)

– This is a totally fascinating article about Stephen King’s family. I really do enjoy my Stephen King books. I find him quite underrated, honestly. Although the older he gets, the less his editor makes him cut anything out. Details, Stephen. (New York Times)

– In honor of the exhibit at Kensington Palace of a variety of royal gowns — Diana’s, Princess Margaret’s, and the Queen’s — Grazia put together a slideshow of some of Princess Margaret’s best. There are some HATS, you guys. (Grazia)

– The outfits in the American Hustle trailer are AMAZING. (Pajiba)

– This is fun: Guess the Rotten Tomato score. (Vulture)

Live At the Fillmore West - 4 July 1971 (Remastered) [Live] - Creedence Clearwater Revival

Formed: 1967 in El Cerrito, CA

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '60s, '70s

At a time when rock was evolving further and further away from the forces that had made the music possible in the first place, Creedence Clearwater Revival brought things back to their roots with their concise synthesis of rockabilly, swamp pop, R&B, and country. Though CCR was very much a group in their tight, punchy arrangements, their vision was very much singer, songwriter, guitarist, and leader John Fogerty's. Fogerty's classic compositions for Creedence both evoked enduring images of Americana... Full Bio

Fug or Fab: Kate Hudson

Well, at the very least, I enjoy Larry David’s piercing eye popping out behind her:

But while I realize that I’m putting this up to a vote, I have to admit that having slept on this — I saw it first last night, when the photos started rolling in –  I am feeling way less charitable about it than I did twelve hours ago. I mean, it fits. And I like sleeves on a dress. But saying, “it fits!” as a selling point for an outfit is kind of like when your friend is dating someone terrible and she notes that he’s awesome because he hardly ever stands her up! It’s the bare minimum of acceptable.  And the more I look at her, the more she looks she’s wearing a quilted photo album. Nice for your photos of camp, but maybe not for wearing.

What do you think?

Fug or Fab The Cover: Blake Lively

On Twitter, one of you noted that Blake here looks like she’s been morphed with Elaine Irwin, and while that’s not necessarily a bad thing, it is also bang on:

She is lovely, but her facial expression cracks me up. Between the open mouth and the clutched coat, there’s something very “I’m cold, I’M SO VERY COLD” about it. And parenthetically: I find it interesting that Lucky has not picked a photo where Blake is smiling. For a couple of reasons: (1) Lucky — in name alone! — implies a sunny, cheerful cover girl, and I feel like traditionally their cover model is smiling. (2) Blake Lively — also in name alone! — seems like a sunny, cheerful person, so this seems slightly off brand for both of them. And, finally, (3) I don’t have a number three, it just seemed wrong to have a list of two. In short, I actually don’t hate this – it just doesn’t seem like it’s necessarily in keeping with the mag’s brand, and I don’t know if I would pick it up and buy it based on this cover. (Although I would certainly pick it up, read the “I don’t have a stylist!” headline, say, “no kidding!” aloud to the magazine, and then put it back and wander off to find the Cheetos.). It feels like, ever since the departure of Kim France, the Powers That Be are trying to turn Lucky into Glamour, despite them already having a Glamour in, you know, GLAMOUR. It seems to me that if they were going to go anywhere new with it, they should have tried to make it their own version of InStyle. Which, after several years away from, I have resubscribed to. InStyle, I could only resist your sunless tanning tips for so long!

How does it grab you?

Young Hollywood Awards Fug Carpet: Cat Deeley

First of all, the entire concept of the “Young Hollywood Awards” makes me giggle. Just because ALL OF LIFE is essentially an awards show for Young Hollywood, given that the members of said group are basically all young, rich, and hot. When will the Old Regular people be celebrated, I ask you?! All that being said, of course, Young Hollywood is The CW’s meat and potatoes, and I have always said that if The CW were ever to go out of business, I would be beyond distraught. So you HAVE these awards shows, CW. Have them in good health, and please live long and prosper.

And please send me an explanation for what is happening here:

Like, LITERALLY what is happening. Is that a….bandeau…over…a…..I can’t even finish that sentence. I feel like this bodice was mostly recently seen on the back pages of the Victoria’s Secret Swimsuit Sale Circular, and while the lovely Ms Deeley carries it off better than most, surely she deserves better. One’s top should not be a a geometry problem.

Glam Slam: Makeup Mondays – Lady Gaga’s Beauty Drink!

First Published: July 22, 2013 11:07 AM EDT Credit: Getty Premium

LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Lady Gaga attends the launch of Fame by Lady Gaga at Harrods on October 7, 2012 in LondonCaption Lady Gaga attends the launch of Fame by Lady Gaga at Harrods on October 7, 2012 in LondonWe all know there are lots of “magic” potions on the market promising to make us look younger and more beautiful.

The latest trend is not what you put on your face, but rather what you drink. Celebrities, like Lady Gaga, Drew Barrymore and the Kardashians, are all indulging in nutrient-rich beauty drinks to improve the health of their skin, hair and nails.

“There is growing clinical data showing that consuming concentrated doses of certain antioxidants do in fact help protect the skin from the effects of damaging free radicals (accelerators in skin aging), which are produced in the skin when exposed to the sun or other pollutants, for example,” reveals celebrity nutrii-cosmetics expert, Paula Simpson.

These beauty elixirs work best when combined with a balanced whole food diet. “Beauty beverages are a convenient way to boost antioxidants or nutrients when we fail to consume the right foods every day. The targeted formulations are usually antioxidant rich and because antioxidants are typically neutralized quickly in the body, this is a great way to get a nutrient boost mid-afternoon or during your hectic day,” adds Paula.

These beauty drinks can be found in tinctures, sticks packs or standard water form. A few of the popular ones on the market to lookout for and suggested by Paula are The Bliss Glow Sticks, Taut Collagen shots and Activate waters.

But, if you want to try and make an at-home beauty drink, Paula shares her favorite beauty breakfast smoothie. It is packed with high-quality protein to support healthy collagen production, is rich in omegas to bring out skin’s radiance and is also a natural detoxifier.

Paula’s Breakfast Smoothie:

Ingredients

1/2 cup coconut water1/2cup water (or almond, rice, or soya milk)1/2 scoop hemp or pea protein (vanilla flavor)1/2 cup frozen raspberries1/2 cup blueberries2 tbsp. probiotic active yogurt1 tsp. Chia seeds1 tbsp. wheat or barley grass1 tsp. cocoa powder1 tsp. flax oilBlend all the ingredients together.

The “Fashion Police” star, 28, and the 29-year-old vegan chef/model confirmed their engagement to Britain’s Hello! magazine, saying he popped the question while on vacation in Anguilla.

“We were on a balcony that overlooks the ocean. It was just beautiful. She said, ‘Yes!” And then she smiled for the rest of the night!” he recounted.

After meeting, Matthew soon moved from New York to Los Angeles to be with Kelly.

“Matthew made the biggest sacrifice anyone’s ever made for me, to move away from everything that he knew to be with me in LA,” Kelly revealed. “Long-distance relationships often don’t work out. We’d dated for a year and knew we wanted to be together. Matthew has broken down every one of my walls. There’s nothing I wouldn’t do in front of him.”

Adding, “I’ve never felt this close to another human being, ever. People say we’re co-dependent but we just want to be together all the time.”

When it came time to creating her custom engagement ring, Kelly got inspiration from her rock legend dad.

Sharknado: The Stars React To Ian Ziering & Tara Reid’s Syfy Movie About Sharks & Tornadoes

First Published: July 12, 2013 9:32 AM EDT Credit: Syfy

Tara Reid and Ian Ziering in Syfy’s ‘Sharknado’Caption Tara Reid and Ian Ziering in Syfy’s ‘Sharknado’ LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- “Sharknado,” the television movie that combined sharks and tornadoes with Ian Ziering and Tara Reid, became an internet sensation on Thursday night when the project captivated the attention of those on Twitter.

Celebrities couldn’t help themselves from Tweeting – heavily – about the Syfy network movie that chronicled what happened when a tornado full of hungry sharks swept through Los Angeles creating devastation and casualties, and with only Ian and Tara to save them.

Some of the best Tweets came from “Sharknado” star Ian Ziering, who Tweeted as he prepped for his Chippendales show in Las Vegas. He even managed to Tweet about an unbelievable scene at the end of the film that saw his character emerge from the belly of a shark by using a chainsaw.

PHOTOS: ‘Sharknado’ — Scenes From The Syfy Hit

“#LiveTweetingSharknado when I read this [script] I thought, chainsawing out of a shark, repelling, guns, sharks, tornadoes, I’ve gotta do this,” the actor Tweeted.

Among those who participated in the #Sharknado trend was “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s” Agent Coulsen himself, actor Clark Greg, who tried to explain the phenomenon that overtook Twitter as U.S. viewers watched the film, to his buddies abroad.

PHOTOS: Hollywood’s Hottest Beach Bodies — The Guys!

“For my overseas pals: There was an awesome/awful TV event on tonight called #sharknado About sharks. In tornados. Chewing up LA #clarknado,” he wrote.

Here are more of the celeb Tweets about the movie that had everyone talking online:

Michael Chiklis: “Clearly SyFy is employing the old, “so bad, it’s good,” method with tremendous effect. #TrendingForHours #SharkNado.”

Patton Oswalt: “No way is SHARKNADO as entertaining as the Tweets about it. Congrats, @SyfyTV. You’ve created a new way to watch movies.”

POLL: Should Syfy make a ‘Sharknado 2’?

Jackson Rathbone: “Watching #sharknado on #syfy ‘Sharks in the swimming pool?! No way..’ Yes way, Mr movie-cliche bad guy. It’s a mother-bleeping Sharknado!”

Chad Lowe: “Why have we not been throwing bombs into tornadoes to stop them? Or are we doing it, and I’m just now learning about it? #Sharknado.”

Wil Wheaton: “‘We lost the night to #SharkNado? What the hell is that?’ - every non-syfy network executive tomorrow morning.”

Judah Friedlander: “Can’t wait to see how @MSNBC & @FoxNews cover this developing #Sharknado story.”

Bill Lawrence: “Sharknado is everything that is right AND wrong about everything.”

Damon Lindelof: “I am going to write the Sharknado sequel and I am going to do it before Shaknado is over.”

Elizabeth Banks: “@DamonLindelof did Tessa already take revenge on the guy who harpooned mom or am I dating his son in #sharknado2 #backstory.”

Olivia Wilde: “@ElizabethBanks Banks, this is our chance to play Siamese twins: two heads, one magnificent shark tail. Emmys all around. #SharknadoTwo.”

LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Vanessa Hudgens arrives at the Los Angeles Premiere ‘Sucker Punch’ at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre on March 23, 2011 in Hollywood, Calif.Caption Vanessa Hudgens arrives at the Los Angeles Premiere ‘Sucker Punch’ at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre on March 23, 2011 in Hollywood, Calif. With the summer heat wave, celebrities are keeping cool with open back dresses. Stars, like Vanessa Hudgens, Alessandra Ambrosio, and Kate Bosworth, have all been spotted sporting outfits with peek-a-boo backs.

SELF magazine spotlighted how to best rock this open-back trend.

First of all, tone your backside, advises Jaclyn Emerick., Associate Fitness Editor of SELF. She recommends using a workout band. Start by securing it around a sturdy object at floor level. Lay face down with your arms straight in front of you, and grasp the workout band handles. Lift your arms, legs, and chest off the floor simultaneously, as you pull your elbows in and pinch your shoulder blades together. Relax your muscles to count 1 rep. Do 3 sets of 15 reps every other day to see results fast.

Also, make sure you’re supported in front. If you have perky B-cups or smaller; you can go without a bra. Otherwise, Lindsay Huggins, Senior Fashion Market Editor of SELF, suggests investing in a supportive bra. Lindsay recommends the NuBra, adding, “it is the must have accessory to wear the backless trend with confidence.” The NuBra is perfect for the backless dress trend as it eliminates bra straps, is self-adhesive, seamless, and supportive.

To add a little pizazz, try incorporating jewelry! “Take a diamond by the yard necklace you already own and drape it down your back, “ advises Amber Herring, who also adds, “stay away from big, chunky charms” and instead opt for “simple chains and lariats.”

Nicki Minaj Wanted To Be A Lawyer; Talks Idol & Her ‘Weird Epiphany’ On A Tour

Nicki Minaj on the cover of the August 2013 issue of Marie Claire magazineCaption Nicki Minaj on the cover of the August 2013 issue of Marie Claire magazine LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Nicki Minaj admitted if she wasn’t a rapper and pop star, she had an interest in becoming a lawyer.

“I just loved the thought of going into a courtroom with mostly men and defending someone – just being able to persuade people with your words,” Nicki told Marie Claire magazine, which features her on its August 2013 cover. “It seems glamorous in a way. Very inspiring and ballsy.”

Nicki has had a slew of hits and toured all over the world, and she told the mag that during her Australian stop she had a “weird epiphany.”

PHOTOS: Nicki Minaj: Her Wild Style

“I was on a world tour, a big feat for a female rapper. For the first time, I allowed myself to feel proud of where music had gotten me, and I felt an overwhelming sense of gratitude. You feel the need to pay it forward, which starts with analyzing yourself with a true desire to grow,” she said. “I was praying every day, ‘You know what, Lord? I want to be a mom one day, and I want to start becoming the woman who I want to parent my child.’ I wanted all of the feelings of entitlement to leave me, because some people have this life for a year or five or 10 – and a lot of them lose it. I didn’t want to become a person who wasn’t enjoying the moment.”

The music superstar also addressed her time on “American Idol” in the interview, noting that it showed people her personality.

WATCH IT NOW: Nicki Minaj: I Wanted A ‘Universal’ Scent For Pink Friday Scent For Pink Friday

“The perception that people had of me completely changed because there are no cue cards, there’s no script, it wasn’t [me] performing a song. It was, ‘Let’s see [your] real personality.’ My core is a genuine human being who roots for other people,” she said. “I didn’t want to blow smoke up their a**. I wanted every contestant to leave with something that they could remember.”

Also included in the interview excerpts released by Marie Claire on Tuesday were Nicki’s tips for getting a man.

“Don’t chase any man. Put your school first. Men love independent women,” she said. “You don’t have to be a bitch, but there’s nothing wrong with it at times. And: Men are kids at heart. They want to be nourished and pet like a dog.”
