Gamification: Should business take games seriously?

Gamification—the application of game-design principles to non-game situations—is gaining traction among businesses that want to engage employees and customers. But can games help solve critical strategic challenges? And can they actually address serious business problems?

Many companies are applying the essence of games—fun, play and passion—to real-world business situations as a way to influence behaviors in everything from back-office tasks and training, to sales management and career counselling. Using game attributes that resonate with their target audiences, companies can often achieve higher performance. That’s all well and good for employee and even customer engagement, but can businesses apply gaming principles to solve more serious challenges – like strategy development and innovation?

Explore all sides below by clicking on each button:

We talk to many companies that want to implement game dynamics to enrich training, staff engagement, customer service and loyalty programs. But gaming can provide an even bigger opportunity for the broader business strategy.

Generally, it takes decades for leaders to gain the knowledge, skills and experiences to effectively develop and apply business strategies. Even with mentoring and rotating management assignments, developing effective leadership skills usually takes years. However, game-like simulations can expose current and future leaders to many real-world business scenarios and accelerate their learning.

For example, one client was concerned that retiring Baby Boomer executives with decades of supply chain experiences would leave a knowledge gap within the organization. They were challenged to capture this institutional knowledge so less-experienced managers could gain access to it. Using executive insights captured through interviews, they employed a 2-D, scenario-based game that was designed to allow participants to make real-world business decisions and quickly see likely outcomes.

This game proved invaluable as a strategic management tool following the 2011 tsunami. Within 24 hours of the disaster, the game was remodeled to remove Japan from the company’s supply chain mix. Based on previous experiences already embedded in the game, managers simulated what they could do and couldn’t do, allowing them to respond quickly with a new supply chain solution.

Strategic games hold potentially large benefits for businesses. First, employees moving up the ranks can test management approaches in a low-risk environment and accelerate their learning. Second, managers have a tool that’s available round-the-clock to test drive decisions in a simulated environment before they commit to any real-world action. And that’s when using games can help people solve serious challenges.

Madfinger Games bringing titles to OUYA, Moga and Gamestick this year

OUYA Console

As a new breed of Android-powered consoles and gamepad accessory devices hit the market, Madfinger Games is hoping to keep up with the times by expanding console and accessory support for its most popular games. First up is Shadowgun, which is expected to hit OUYA on June 4th, as well as be available when Gamestick officially launches. Madfinger also says it isn't ruling out porting over even its older games to the consoles. On the accessory front, Dead Trigger will support both the Moga Pro and Wikipad controllers, which will add to its current support of Shadowgun: DeadZone.

Madfinger says it is interested in bringing all of its popular games to the different platforms and controllers, which is a big deal for gamers that want a better experience than using just touch controls. As these accessories become more popular, having this wider support can be a big plus for the studio.

April 31, 2013 - Brno, Czech Republic – MADFINGER Games, developer studio responsible for mobile gaming hits such as Shadowgun and Dead Trigger, has announced that, in the upcoming months, it will begin support for several game consoles, which are either already available on the market or are presently under release.

“New platforms such as Gamestick, Ouya and gaming peripherals from MOGA and Wikipad have given our independent development studio the opportunity to broaden its reach to include another part of the gaming community. It validates the strength behind the portfolio of Android applications, which can boldly compete with the offering of AAA titles available on traditional game consoles,” said Tomáš Šlápota, Vice President at MADFINGER Games.

Owners of Ouya consoles can get in on the action with last year’s hit among mobile games, the third-person shooter Shadowgun, which is scheduled for release on June 4, 2013.  MADFINGER Games has not ruled out Ouya support with its previous games, including its oldest title, the hack’n’slash Samurai II: Vengeance or even its most recent, Dead Trigger.
"We are thrilled to bring Shadowgun to OUYA" said Kellee Santiago, Head of Developer Relations for OUYA. "Our gamers have been asking for it since Day 1, so we're excited to announce that it will be available to them, and with a free-to-try model exclusively for OUYA."

Another Kickstarter console – PlayJam's GameStick - will come pre-installed with Shadowgun for those who backed the GameStick Kickstarter campaign in order to pre-order a unit. Moreover Shadowgun will be available on GameStick’s separate Marketplace.

"Madfinger Games have produced some amazing games - with engaging gameplay and beautiful graphics that has set the benchmark for high quality games on mobiles and tablets", said Sameer Baroova, Head of Games at PlayJam.
Another gaming device for which MADFINGER is currently developing support for, is Wikipad, which will offer compatibility with Dead Trigger, Shadowgun, and even Shadowgun: DeadZone. Shadowgun: DeadZone and Dead Trigger come preloaded on Wikipad.

“MADFINGER’s games take full advantage of Wikipad’s patented dual analogy gamepad controller instantly transforming them into AAA console-like gaming experiences. Our partnership with MADFINGER embodies how the next-generation of gaming will take place across multiple platforms including mobile rather than just in the traditional console space,” said Fraser Townley, President, Sales, Wikipad Inc.

At the beginning of 2013, MADFINGER Games began close cooperation with PowerA, the manufacturer of the MOGA controller. MOGA already supports Shadowgun: DeadZone, as well as Dead Trigger, which after the next update, will be available for play to those with the latest MOGA Pro controller. MADFINGER Games is presently working on support for the first title from the series, Shadowgun.

“MOGA is proud to have the support of MADFINGER Games, delivering amazing gameplay experiences with MOGA Pro and Pocket controllers to owners of all their titles,“ said Eric Bensussen, President of PowerA.

Sport stars to unveil 2018 Games logo

Lucy Ardern   |  12:46pm March 26, 2013

SPORTING stars have been recruited to unveil the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games emblem to the world next week from Southport.

Hurdler Sally Pearson, sprinter Simon Patmore and swimmer Kieren Perkins will all be at the Broadwater Parkland's celebration next week, which is five years out from the day that the Gold Coast Games kick off.

Games chairman Nigel Chamier said Pearson, Patmore and Perkins illustrated Australia's proud Games record and the significant contribution made by Queensland athletes.

``Sally's success at the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games commenced her international domination of the women's 100m hurdles, which continued through to the London Olympics,'' he said.

``Simon also won gold over 100m at the Delhi Commonwealth Games and Kieren is regarded as one of the legends of world swimming.''

The emblem will be revealed at 7.15am on April 4.
