PREP school introduces Ipad scheme for the students

In January 2012 The Hague University of Applied Sciences' English Language Preparatory School (prep school) will provide its students with Ipads.

These will replace most of the paper used and lead to a more sustainable curriculum. Students will have to pay a deposit, but may become owners of the ipad on obtaining good results at the end of the programme.

This scheme will replace the merit scholarships that were available until July 2011.The English Language Preparatory School helps students acquire the study skills and the high level of proficiency in English required for studying at Dutch universities.

The prep programme aims to prepare for studying in English medium Bachelors or Masters programmes of The Hague University of Applied Sciences or at other institutions of Higher Education in the Netherlands. Dataguise introduces field-level encryption for Apache Hadoop database

Dataguise says the latest version of its data-protection product enables users to encrypt sensitive data right down to specific fields within an open source Apache Hadoop database.

DG for Hadoop 4.3 also makes use of the traditional Dataguise "masking" capability across single or multiple Hadoop clusters to camouflage sensitive data.

As for the new capabilities, the product can be used to encrypt structured and unstructured data via the Advanced Encryption Standard.

Subra Ramesh, architect and technical director at Dataguise, says DG for Hadoop 4.3 has a way to conduct a context-sensitive search of unstructured data. You can establish an automated policy to discover specific kinds of data, such as credit-card numbers, for example, and encrypt them, he says, adding, "Decrypting it is based on someone's permission."

When a task is carried out or changes occur, DG for Hadoop can send out automated notifications to the security manager by e-mail or SMS, and reporting is designed to be included in compliance reports.

DG for Hadoop 4.3 starts at $25,000.

Google introduces the One Today charity app

Google can be proud of many things, and it has just added another one to the list. In an attempt to bring people and non-profit charity organizations closer, it's introducing the One Today application.

Currently available in an invite-only form, One Today will make project discovery easy, as it will present users with a new initiative each day. Users can then use the app to donate $1 to that initiative. Some of the initial projects include teaching empathy, scholarships for students in Laos, Rhino protection, as well as tree-planting in Kenya.

When the app launches officially, it should be available for Android, iOS, Windows Phone and BlackBerry, but for now it'll be accessible to Android users only.
