As many European countries, the Spanish university system, has 3 main education cycles for studying the Bachelor’s Degree (in Spanish Grado), Masters’ Degree and Doctoral Degree.
Bachelor’s Degree (first circle) - 4 yearsWhen one has to study for the Bachelor’s degree, one has to earn a total of 240 ECTS credit through the four academic years. The structure of study consists of Basic training, Obligatory subjects, optional subjects, External Placements and end of degree thesis and cultural activities. The students will get credit for each of these heads.
Master’s Degree (second circle) 1 - 2 yearsThe Master degree totals credits between 60 – 120 ECTS. The students are prepared for the academic, research or professional work and the Master degree is awarded to them which is valid for all countries.
Doctoral Degree (third circle)The doctoral programme in Spain is aimed to train the students in the advanced research methods. The programmes have 2 parts and the first part has got 60 credits for studying and it can form a part of the Master’s Degree. The second part is the research projects that the students carry on as thesis. The duration of the programme is for three years if the research is done for full time and it becomes for five years if the research done is for a parttime basis.

The cost of study for bachelor’s degrees (grado) varies between 500 and 1,120 € per year at public universities programmes and between 5,000 and 12,000 euros per academic year. The tuition fees at public universities are defined by the education authorities of the regional administration and can not be changed. Spanish private universities are allowed to establish the bachelor programme fee themself.
The tuition fees of postgraduate ( master’s and doctoral degrees) at public and private universities are administrated by the Spanish government. It is used to make calculation based on the number of credits which will be gained during studies. On average study fees are between €16 and € 30 per credit, that means that in total cost of a master programme can be in a range of € 960 and €1800.
