Around the uneven freeways and potholed roads of Los Angeles, daily commuting in the little Subaru requires a willingness to be jostled around. The price paid for little body roll and that glued-to-the-asphalt feel on Southern California's best back roads is a pretty firm ride around town. Living with the car week to week and month to month, I've gotten used to the way it rides and even put it out of mind. But getting back into the BRZ after a few days spent in a more supple sedan or SUV can be a little eye-opening. For those looking for a true sports car, that shouldn't be a deal breaker at all -- it wouldn't be for me. I just took Burrzz in for its third service at roughly 21,000 miles (a routine oil change and inspection) and the dealer also replaced the shifter mechanism -- knob to lever assembly -- under a service bulletin. I'd be experiencing a bit of shifter rattle at certain RPMs on the freeway, and the revised assembly with different bushings appears to be the fix I was looking for. The lever is now rattle-free and has lost the slight notchiness it used to have, shifting better than ever. Subaru WRX Concept First Look

Subaru dropped the curtains surrounding the WRX Concept and the car was immediately swarmed by journalists from the world over. The WRX looks even better in person than in pictures -- it's plain weird for an actual honest-to-goodness good-looking WRX to exist. Normally with the WRX, you have to make excuses for its sometimes questionable lines. Not so with this WRX Concept. It's got a broad and powerful nose, attractive "hawk eye" headlights, and a new evolution of the signature WR Blue that just pops. Unlike most Subaru concepts, this one actually looks like it was designed with the complexities of production in mind. That said, I could see things like its mirrors, and door handles changed. Official: Subaru confirms performance concept, XV Crosstrek Hybrid for New York

SUBARU TO INTRODUCE FIRST-EVER PRODUCTION HYBRID MODEL AND NEW PERFORMANCE CONCEPT CAR AT 2013 NEW YORK INTERNATIONAL AUTO SHOW

Cherry Hill, NJ March 20, 2013– Subaru of America, Inc. today announced the brand's first-ever production hybrid vehicle, the Subaru XV Crosstrek Hybrid, will debut at the 2013 New York International Auto Show at the Jacob K. Javits Center. Based on the popular XV Crosstrek crossover, the new XV Crosstrek Hybrid model uses a Subaru engineered Hybrid system and Subaru's Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive.

In addition to the new XV Crosstrek Hybrid, Subaru will also reveal an all-new performance concept car.

Subaru issues recall over cars that may start themselves

Subaru has issued one of the strangest recalls we've come across in some time. As it turns out, certain Subaru models may randomly start their own engines. The issue is confined to select models equipped with an automatic or CVT and the company's optional Audiovox remote engine starter (RES) accessory. If the RES key fob is dropped, it could "randomly transmit an engine start request without pressing the button."

Vehicles affected include the 2010-2012 Legacy and Outback with an automatic or CVT, 2012-2013 Impreza with the CVT, and 2013 XV Crosstrek with CVT (shown), all equipped with the Audiovox RES accessory. Likewise, certain 2013 Legacy and Outbacks may have received replacement RES fobs that could be affected. All told, 47,419 vehicles are included in the recall.

Should one of these cars start on their own, Subaru says they will run up to 15 minutes, but the vehicle may also continue to start and stop until either the battery in the fob dies or the car runs out of fuel. Of course, if one of these cars is parked in an enclosed area, that means harmful gasses could build up, which could be dangerous if inhaled.

The fix is an obvious one: Subaru will replace the RES fobs for free. Owners of the affected vehicles can expect to be notified by the end of April, though their car might let them know sooner. Report Receipt Date: FEB 25, 2013

SUMMARY:
Subaru is recalling certain model year 2010-2012 Legacy and Outback vehicles equipped with an automatic or CVT transmission and an Audiovox remote engine starter (RES) accessory, certain model year 2012-2013 Impreza vehicles equipped with a CVT transmission and an Audiovox remote engine starter (RES) accessory, and certain model year 2013 XV Crosstrek vehicles equipped with a CVT transmission and an Audiovox remote engine starter (RES) accessory. Additionally included are certain model year 2013 Legacy and Outback vehicles that may have received replacement RES fobs. If the RES fob is dropped, the fob may malfunction and randomly transmit an engine start request without pressing the button.

CONSEQUENCE:
The engine may inadvertently start and run for up to fifteen minutes. The engine may continue to start and stop until the fob battery is depleted, or until the vehicle runs out of fuel. If the vehicle is parked in an enclosed area, there is a risk of carbon monoxide build-up which may cause headaches, dizziness or, in extreme cases, unconsciousness and/or asphyxiation.

REMEDY:
Subaru will notify owners, and dealers will replace the RES key fobs, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin by the end of April 2013. Owners may contact Subaru at 1-800-782-2783 for more information.

NOTES:
Original equipment keyless entry fobs integrated on the vehicle key are not affected. Subaru's recall campaign number is WQF-42. Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.

Video: Subaru Impreza shows off 360-degree passing technique

Leave it to a Subaru WRX to find a new way to improve the art of passing. This dash cam vid shows a white WRX pirouetting past our recording car and somehow straightening out before either sliding off the road or slamming into the car ahead. If this were a standard move in rally racing, the WRC would be bigger than NASCAR.

Like most dash cam vids, we don't know where it was shot (Russia's always a good bet) or what the circumstances were (did the driver spin on purpose or was the 360-degree slide accidental?), but the remarkable feat was caught on camera and uploaded to YouTube, preserving it for an Internet eternity.
