Lucky escape as ute smashes into tree

FIREFIGHTERS spent an hour working to free a man trapped in his friend's high-powered ute after it smashed into a tree at Robina during yesterday's storms which hammered the southeast corner.

Paramedics were called to the crash in Manly Drive at 6pm and were able to stabilise the driver while two fire crews used the jaws of life to free the passenger.

Robina Fire Station officer John Roberts said there was an exceptional amount of rain that fell at Robina last night and the accident happened during ``the brunt of the storm''.

``It looks like it aquaplaned, which is not uncommon in these wet conditions,'' he said.

``It's a timely reminder to slow down, look after your mates in such extreme wet conditions.

``It was a lucky escape and a wonderful outcome considering it was such a technical job.''

Mr Roberts said the passenger's legs were pinned down by the front left side of the car.

``There was a hell of a lot of electronics and metal and plastic pinning his legs down,'' he said.

``But the ambos were able to stabilise him. He wasn't in any pain so we were able to slow it down and take our time.''

The storm drenched Biggera Waters with 21mm of rain between 5pm to 6pm, while Molendinar (17mm), Southport (18mm) and Labrador (17mm) were also drenched.

Energex was kept busy restoring power to 179 homes at Mudgeeraba last night.

The storm also affected several traffic signals at busy intersections at Ashmore, Biggera Waters and Oxenford.
