2013 Infiniti JX35 Long-Term Update 3

Update Now By Julia LaPalme | Photos By Motor Trend Staff | From the November 2013 issue of Motor Trend | I recently took the JX35 in for its third maintenance interval, which was simply an oil change, oil filter change, and tire rotation. There was a concern that the front driver's side wheel was making noises at freeway speeds, but the folks at the Infiniti dealership found nothing wrong with the wheel or suspension parts. After making sure our vehicle was not part of recall #13V139000 for a failed brake torque member, they assured me the noise I heard was the hydrolic-electric steering. Aside from mysterious noises, the JX35 could use a little finesse in the cruise control department. While driving in Normal and Eco modes around town can be a bit sluggish, driving in Sport mode while using cruise control is almost jarring. For the most part, the JX cruises well on the freeway, using adaptive cruise control to mind its distance from vehicles ahead of us. However, when the adaptive cruise control has slowed down below my set speed, and I change lanes to pass slower traffic, the JX suddenly accelerates aggressively to get back up to speed. 2013 Infiniti JX35 Hook

Infiniti explains Q naming scheme in new video

What's in a name? When it comes to cars, it can be a lot more than you think. Infiniti caused quite a bit of hubbub late last year when it announced it would be changing its vehicle names so that all of its cars start with Q and all of its crossovers and SUVs start with QX. Now, the luxury division of Nissan has posted a video that it says explains the historically relevant reason for the new Q badge.

The video explains that the Q name comes from Infiniti's very first model, the Q45. Infiniti is returning to the Q name to pay homage to that legacy, and it's starting with the all-new Q50 sedan. However, while most of Infiniti's 2014 models will get the new Q badge, the G37 Sedan will keep its nameplate through model year 2015 (despite the fact that Infiniti already changed the G37 Coupe and G37 Convertible models to the name Q60).

Infiniti aims to "de-Americanize" lineup, add flagship

Nissan launched Infiniti back in 1989 as a US brand, but more recently, Nissan's luxury marque has started focusing on more of a global presence. With a new global headquarters set up in Hong Kong and former Audi bigwig Johan de Nysschen at the helm, Wards Auto is reporting that the automaker's next goal is to create a "de-Americanized" lineup of vehicles.

This plan essentially consists of smaller cars and smaller-displacement engines to make Infiniti more attractive for buyers in Europe and Asia – two regions that tend to skew more toward smaller vehicles and smaller powerplants. To this point, Infiniti has been focused on vehicles better-suited to the US market – in fact, its smallest engine is a 3.7-liter V6 with 330 horsepower, and it doesn't offer a single diesel.

The first step in this transformation will be part of the Daimler-Nissan engine deal that will see a four-cylinder diesel eventually used in the 2014 Q50, but the report also reconfirms the importance of the soon-to-arrive Q30 production model (a concept of which was revealed last week in Frankfurt), along with the idea of a QX30 based on the Nissan Qashqai. There's also the latest projection of a full-electric Infiniti model that Wards says will debut sometime around 2015. Of course, Infiniti isn't giving up on large cars entirely – the reports indicates that Infiniti is planning a fullsize flagship model – possibly named Q80 – to compete against German sedans like the Audi A8, BMW 7 Series and Mercedes-Benz S-Class.

This global strategy was likely a key factor in the brand's decision to rename its entire current lineup including the well-established G. Like all luxury automakers, Infiniti is eyeing growth in China, and it has plans to expand its dealer network in the country from 60 to 80, with the goal of having up to as many as 200 outlets by the end of the decade.
