AT&T to reportedly add Apple's iPhone to GoPhone prepaid lineupBy AppleInsider Staff

The nation's second-largest carrier AT&T will reportedly add Apple's iPhone to the list of devices customers can buy through its GoPhone prepaid brand on Friday, with the handset coming alongside the activation of 4G LTE and HSPA+ support for the service.

GoPhone
According to MacRumors, the addition of the iPhone to GoPhone's lineup is part of a larger expansion of services set to take place on Friday, as AT&T will start offering prepaid customers access to its LTE and HSPA+ data network for the first time.

While iPhone owners have been able to use the prepaid service for some time, the terms never allowed for data network access, rendering many of the Apple handset's capabilities useless.

Pricing will be arranged in three separate packages. At the top is a $65 per month plan which comes with unlimited calling and 1 gigabyte of data, while both the $50 and $25 monthly voice plans require an add-on fee for data.

Existing iPhone owners using GoPhone will automatically be updated with data access on June 21, though they have the option to manually upgrade to the new service.

The news comes amidst a strong push for the iPhone from other U.S. prepaid carriers like Virgin Mobile, which last week debuted a 15 percent discount for iPhone 5 purchases made through its website. Regional carrier Cricket Wireless helped raise the handset's marketshare after kicking off sales last year, while a rumored deal with Boost Mobile is said to be in the works.Tags:AT&TJump to comments (20)Categories:iPhone(function(d, s, id) { var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0]; if (d.getElementById(id)) return; js = d.createElement(s); js.id = id; js.src = "//connect.facebook.net/en_US/all.js#xfbml=1"; fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs);}(document, 'script', 'facebook-jssdk'));Tweet!function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js";fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,"script","twitter-wjs"); On Topic: iPhoneiPhone urinalysis app draws scrutiny from FDABest Buy to offer $50 off all iPhone 5 & 4S models starting SundayNew service delivers passes for Apple's Passbook via text messageAT&T to reportedly add Apple's iPhone to GoPhone prepaid lineupApple airs new iPhone ad, continues brilliant 'quiet' TV campaignToday's' HeadlinesNo news headlines yet todayRelated ArticlesPrepaid iPhone coming to Virgin Mobile USA by July - reportApple's iPhone 5 to launch on US prepaid carrier Cricket Sept. 28Apple's iPhone coming to Virgin Mobile with $30/mo. plans June 29Briefly: Virgin Mobile offers 15% discount on prepaid iPhone 4/4SAmerica's first prepaid iPhone arrives on Cricket Wireless June 22Previous Comments View Allgazoobee2013/05/24 01:20am

"The news comes amidst a strong push for the iPhone from other U.S. prepaid carriers like Virgin Mobile, which last week debuted a 15 percent discount for iPhone 5 purchases made through its website."

The last time I checked, VM wasn't offering the iPhone 5, much less a 15% discount on said device.

Cheers.

Only 5 GB? I pay $45 for unlimited data, voice, and text at Straight Talk.

So what? AT&T and Verizon are still government supported bandits sucking our $$$$ s away.

Good news: Check T'Mobile's family rate LAN for 5 phones. Unlimited text, voice, and 500 MB data for $22/month/smartphone (including iPhone). That's $120/month total vs ATTs $300 ! And Verizon is worse!

What's going on? Well, watch out AT&T and Verizon! You're arrogant pricing is soon to die.

Bad News: T'Mobile's network is sparse and in some parts, their plan is not available or too weak. But they're building their network out and all we need to do is patient, alert, and spring when the buildout makes it a feasible choice in our locale.

Alert in Cville, VA...

I pay $55 per line for unlimited voice / txt and 10gb data pool on 5 lines with att and a corporate discount. 1wink.gif

What in the world are you talking about? Is it physically impossible within the laws of physics of this branch of the multiverse for AT&T to add the EXISTING MODELS OF IPHONE to their service or something?

johnny mozzarella2013/05/24 10:14am

After more than a decade with AT&T, I am switching to Virgin Mobile. Instead of $70 I'll be paying $40/iPhone. I calculate a savings of about $1500 over the next 2 years. I can deal with having the 4S for another year or two.

When you read the fine print for Straight Talk, none of it is really unlimited. You should try it sometime.?

?

On that note, I'm switching over to Net10 starting next month. They're more honest, and clearly state AT&T-compatible is limited to 1.5GB of data ANY WAY YOU WANT TO USE IT, minus tethering... I'm not going to point it out again, so you'll have to read Straight Talk's terms of service for yourself.?

Microsoft caught lying about tablet size in comparison to Apple's iPadBy Daniel Eran Dilger

In an attempt to draw interest away from Apple's iPad, Microsoft has set up a tablet comparison page that falsely presents the iPad as having a smaller screen than a Windows tablet with less screen area.

Microsoft iPad comparison
Source: Microsoft
Microsoft presents a series of four tablet devices running either Windows 8 or Windows RT, but the default comparison pits a full size 9.7 inch iPad against the 10.6 inch Asus VivoTab Smart.

However, as noted by blogger Elliot Temple of Curi.us, Microsoft's comparison graphics are not to scale.

"Microsoft has drawn a 10.1 inch tablet 36% larger than a 9.7 inch tablet," Temple wrote, pointing out that the iPad actually has a screen area of 45.16 square inches, while the Asus tablet is actually 3.5 percent smaller at 43.56 square inches, "not 36% more as Microsoft depicts."

Microsoft iPad comparison
Source: Microsoft
Microsoft doesn't just imply the Windows device is bigger; the site actually states that the ASUS VivoTab Smart "has a bigger touchscreen," when in fact it does not. Microsoft also points out that the Asus product has a lower battery life rating, is slightly thicker, and weights slightly less.

One detail Microsoft doesn't mention: the current iPad has sported a Retina Display with a resolution of 2048 by 1536 for years now, while the new Asus Windows tablet has an "HD" resolution of just 1366 x768, more comparable to the original iPad from three years ago.

iPad can't run our apps that we won't sell you

Microsoft also draws attention to the fact that "the only consumer Office app the iPad can run is OneNote," an interesting claim from the only company that has the power to port Microsoft Office apps to the iPad. The company is already rumored to have done this but is apparently withholding their release until all hope is lost for Windows tablets.

Office
Microsoft also notes that the Asus tablet ships with ports for attaching HDMI and SD cards; Apple sells such dongles separately but also offers the technology to access external screens and storage wirelessly via AirPort and iCloud.

A fourth unfavorable comparison Microsoft makes is contrasting Apple's included 5GB of iCloud storage with the free 7GB it offers via SkyDrive. However, iPad users can access both Apple's iCloud and Microsoft's SkyDrive, meaning that it effectively provides 12GB of "free cloud storage" to anyone who wants to sign up for both.

The high cost of Windows baggage

Microsoft lastly compares the two models on price, depicting the iPad as $699 in comparison to the $449 Asus tablet, both at 64GB. However, Windows consumes much more storage than iOS does, so the free space Microsoft is giving it also is taking away.

On Windows tablets like the Asus, a full 8GB of storage is consumed by a "recovery partition," leaving, after Windows and other bundled software, just 33GB free, about half of the advertised storage. The list price of the Asus tablet is $499 ($420 on Amazon), and 64GB is the cheapest model available.

Apple's full size iPad also starts at $499 (with models as low as $410 on Amazon). Apple's iOS also consumes much less storage, only around 4GB. A 32GB iPad has over 28GB free, making pure price per GB comparisons misleading.

Microsoft also makes no mention of Asus' NFC feature, promoted as "tap and Explore: simple interaction with other NFC enabled devices" on the Asus website. NFC has failed to capture much attention among consumers a year after Google, Microsoft and their partners have tried to leverage it as a differentiating feature that Apple has chosen not to support.

Microsoft spent two years reworking its failed Windows Slate PC efforts in order to more effectively compete with Apple's iPad, which has been eating its way into both consumer and enterprise markets, gobbling up conventional PC sales.

The moves included a two pronged effort to target both desktop PC users with iPad-like features and a tablet-optimized version of Windows capable of running on more efficient ARM hardware like the iPad (but incapable of running conventional Windows software).

Both efforts have failed to gain traction.Tags:WindowsMicrosofttabletsJump to comments (79)Categories:iPad(function(d, s, id) { var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0]; if (d.getElementById(id)) return; js = d.createElement(s); js.id = id; js.src = "//connect.facebook.net/en_US/all.js#xfbml=1"; fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs);}(document, 'script', 'facebook-jssdk'));Tweet!function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js";fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,"script","twitter-wjs"); On Topic: WindowsMicrosoft caught lying about tablet size in comparison to Apple's iPadApple software update brings QuickTime for Windows to 7.7.4Editorial: Apple's iOS is the new WindowsFujifilm to help PC makers take on Apple with new touchscreen techApple's iPhone and iPad models claim top 5 slots in enterprise device activations for Q4Today's' HeadlinesNo news headlines yet todayRelated ArticlesTest finds Surface Pro's storage space comparable to MacBook AirMicrosoft Surface with Windows RT to start at $499Microsoft Surface tablet with Windows RT to start at $499Microsoft's changes to Windows 8 certification rules hint at potential iPad mini competitorMicrosoft says Surface screen outperforms iPad Retina displayPrevious Comments View Allslurpy2013/05/23 03:56pm

This article should have said 1. MS lies about screen size. 2. New iPads actually start from $329. End of article.

I understand that puffing is a legal practice in marketing and sales but this goes way beyond that. This is deceptive and outright fraudulent in some cases. I wonder what the UK judge would have to say about this -- my bet is it would be a lot more than "its not as cool". I bet they are not running this advert in the UK.

Nice 1st post. Love people who register on Apple sites just to post comments like these. Justifying/defending something like this just to find an excuse to bash Apple because of a previous incident, (which is different in so many ways, because what was being compared were software elements) ?because of how much you despise the company. Apparently nothing was worth registering for until this very moment, to make this very comment. I'm sure we'll see a bright future of trolling from you.?

jungmark2013/05/23 04:40pm

Wait, Microsoft lies? In other news, water is still wet.

cobby102013/05/23 04:42pm

@phrosty23

Apple wasn't making size comparisons, the images were to dispute general software characteristics of the Lawsuit. The images were on different pages, and both images were not to scale. Size or scale was not part of the lawsuit.

This is a direct comparison in size and even stated as larger, yet it is not.

digitalclips2013/05/23 04:42pm

Well known sign of inadequacy, lying about your size that is. 1biggrin.gif

?

Evidently two years of rework wasn't enough. ?Of course, it was a lose-lose proposition for Microsoft from the very start. ?I think there were only three possible scenarios for Surface vs. iPad:

?

- The "success" scenario:?Surface becomes a raging success equalling or surpassing iPad sales. ?Surface hardware revenues soar beyond whatever MS can eke out of Xbox. ?But, because Surface's Windows RT / Pro apps and OS updates are much cheaper than legacy Windows + Office software licenses and updates, the company's overall revenue drops. ?Apple still makes money on iPad, selling to consumers and enterprise, still hurting Microsoft's profitability. ?But it's a two-horse race: Surface and iPad. ?MS actively iterates Surface and releases a Surface mini to broaden the line.

?

- The "don't care" scenario: Surface sales are moderate but still "successful." ?Surface hardware revenue is not stellar, but gives the business some sustainability. ?And again, because Surface's Windows RT / Pro apps and OS updates are much cheaper than legacy Windows + Office software licenses and updates, the company's software revenue drops. ?It's break-even. ?MS could flip a coin: keeping Surface or canceling it makes little or no difference to their overall revenue. ?They decide to keep marketing it because it makes them look relevant and modern.

?

- The "nightmare" scenario: Surface sales are dismal. ?iPad continues to dominate in the consumer and corporate pad computing markets, disrupting the legacy PC markets that Microsoft once thought they had locked up in perpetuity. ?The Surface division operates at a loss, and Microsoft's overall revenues decline due to the iPad onslaught. ?They decide to continue marketing Surface because they think it makes them look relevant and modern, even though it costs them plenty of money and in reality makes them look foolish and out of touch. ?They hype Xbox more, because it is their only successful post-PC device.

?

I think we all know which scenario is now playing out.

?

that is also misleading... you do not get 2048X1536 real estate on an ipad... you do get the full work environment of 1366X768 using windows 8

you cant do a direct resolution comparison - the OS is using the resolution in different ways.

Verizon Cloud iPhone backup software launches on Apple's App StoreBy AppleInsider Staff

Verizon this week launched a new iPhone application for its subscribers that gives access to the carrier's cloud-based syncing and backup service.

Verizon
The official Verizon Cloud application is now available as a free download on the App Store. It requires iOS 5.0 or later, and is optimized for the 4-inch display on the iPhone 5.

Customers can sign up for the Verizon Cloud service, which debuted last month, by visiting the carrier's website. The entry-level 500-megabyte plan is free, while 25 gigabytes are available for $2.99 per month, 75 gigabytes for $5.99 per month, or 125 gigabytes for $9.99 per month.

Features of the newly released iOS application, according to Verizon, include:
Keep your phone's content safe and secure in your own private cloud storage
Access your content when you need it, even on the go, on any compatible device, your computer or the web
Sync photos and videos from Verizon Cloud to your device, and then share that synched content with your friends and family
Stream music and access documents stored in Verizon Cloud on your phone
Backup content from your computer's hard drive to your Verizon Cloud using the downloadable computer app. You can then access that content on your mobile devices.Tags:VerizonApp StoreJump to comments (16)Categories:iOS(function(d, s, id) { var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0]; if (d.getElementById(id)) return; js = d.createElement(s); js.id = id; js.src = "//connect.facebook.net/en_US/all.js#xfbml=1"; fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs);}(document, 'script', 'facebook-jssdk'));Tweet!function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js";fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,"script","twitter-wjs"); On Topic: VerizonVerizon Cloud iPhone backup software launches on Apple's App StoreVerizon confirms $100 iPhone 5 for featurephone customers [u]ESPN interested in subsidizing mobile data plans to ensure users can stream videoSupply shortages delay Samsung Galaxy S4 launch at Sprint, T-MobileSlowing iPhone growth may be function of smartphone industry, not restricted to AppleToday's' HeadlinesNo news headlines yet todayRelated ArticlesMicrosoft releases Kinectimals game, SkyDrive storage for iOSAmazon launches Cloud Player app on iOS App StoreLegal issues prompt Apple to remove Amazon Cloud music player from App StoreGoogle Drive launches with 5GB of free cloud storageAmazon takes on Apple's Photo Stream with Cloud Drive Photos iOS appPrevious Comments View Alljack mac2013/05/24 12:03pm

I'd question it if it were free, and they've had Backup Assistant for a few years now so I think that they have some good experience with cloud backups.

How is this different from these: iCloud, Drop Box, and various other Online Backups?

Privacy and Competence are Major Concerns too!

I don't see how Verizon's, or any Cell Carrier's Support for Apple's Products is better than AppleCare!

Walking into US Cell Carrier's Stores is the best Advertising for AppleCare! In most cases in those stores they try harder to sell Android Phones. Why? Cause Apple's Products Just Work, and thus puts the Carrier's Employees Out Of Work, cause their "Support" is not needed. That is what I have observed, so I assume that it's like that in most places!

All Carriers should focus on is Reliable Fast Connection at Lowest Price!

Apple lets these Apps in its stores, and Consumers vote with their Money!

I understand that iCloud Backup is not as Complete as Local USB Backup! So is Verizon saying that they have solved that problem, so that Local USB and iCloud iOS Backups are Identical? If yes, I'd love Apple to offer the same capability!

We'll see what News WWDC 2013 has to offer with the New iOS 7 and Mac OS 9 etc.

I'd love to see Apple offer Renewals of AppleCare after the Initial 3 Years! That way one goes to the Source! Obviously, with the Toll Free Phone Support!

Sure thing, Verizon, I'll back up my files on your network.

And then discover that I can't retrieve them when needed because it will exceed your bandwidth caps...

This is a good point - VZ already has experience in the area.? I don't see any reason why they'd be less trustworthy than Apple.? While iCloud has been very good overall, it's not like it hasn't had hiccups.? That said, the 15GB iCloud subscription I already pay for is enough for me.
